Newport is the original “City by the Sea.” It is an old colonial town which has attracted the wealthy from nearby states for well over a century as a summer vacation spot. If you are a beach lover, you have plenty to choose from. Easton’s Beach, aka First Beach is Newport’s public beach. It looks to the famous CliffWalk and the shore of Middletown, its neighbor. The neighborhoods that line the downtown area are from the north, the Historic Point Section between the Goat Island and Newport Bridge, Historic Hill running east behind Brick Market and America’s Cup, the Yachting Village down Lower Thames Street, and the Fifth Ward south of Narragansett Avenue. Broadway is Newport’s Soho neighborhood with an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, and artist galleries. The main area is closer to downtown, but the shops, restaurants, and night life continue well up Broadway near the hospital.
